The new Advantage DLX redefines
desktop printer performance.

Cognitive printers are known for their exceptional ruggedness, reliability, and durability. The new Advantage DLX continues to build on this reputation and adds unsurpassed print and first label out speeds, a full suite of communication options including USB (standard on all printers), and easy integration with ERP and legacy installations.

“The DLX printer is the most powerful and rugged desktop printer on the market today,” said Barry Knott, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for ATSI Holdings. “It’s a great value for those who demand reliable performance from their label printer for years to come.”

The Advantage DLX printers are rugged enough to withstand the harshest environments, elegant and compact enough to meet the requirements of the healthcare market, and smart enough to work in stand-alone applications without the need for a PC.

Printer Imaging

The main technology used throughout the Auto Identification and Data Collection industry (AIDC) is provided by thermal printers.  There are two basic methodologies used by thermal printhead technology printers: Direct Thermal (DT) and Thermal Transfer (TT).

What is Direct Thermal (DT) Printing?
Direct thermal printing creates an image or marks the printable media by the use of small controlled heat sections on the thermal printhead.  Heat alone is the active agent in this type of printing.  Specially coated and thermally sensitive media reacts to the direct heat and the paper darkens at fine spaces where this reaction occurs between the paper’s coating and the printhead.

Advantages

 Disadvantages

 No ribbon required

Limited number of available types of media

Lower operational cost

Highly sensitive to heat, light, abrasion

Short media shelf life

Limited image quality

Direct Thermal printing includes applications such as:

  • Mobile Applications
  • Shelf Marking
  • Price Change or Promotional Marking

What is Thermal Transfer (TT) Printing?
Thermal Transfer printing creates an image by melting a coating of wax or resin of a specially inked ribbon onto media as the media passes under the printhead.  At each of these fine spaces the ribbon’s ink stays glued (or ‘ironed’) onto the media surface and as such is ‘Thermally Transferred’ from the ribbon to the media.  Using this method, the ribbon material reacts to the direct heat of printhead elements and the media darkens to the degree that the ribbon’s ink is burned onto the printable surface.

Wax ribbons are best for general purpose labeling.
Wax/resin ribbons are a good choice for moderate scratch, abrasion and mild chemical resistance.   Resin ribbons provide the best performance in harsh environmental conditions.

Advantages

 Disadvantages

Requires 1 to 2 years media shelf life

Special ribbons required

Media is not heat sensitive

Average operational cost

Medium to high image quality

Cannot print on multiple-copy paper

Wide range of available types

Single-pass ribbons only

Industrial thermal transfer printing includes applications such as:

  • Industrial Printing Applications
  • Decal
  • Signage
  • Ticketing
  • Tagging
